Your essay gets about seven minutes of someone’s attention.

That is roughly how long an admissions reader spends on a file. We read your draft against the rubric that actually applies to it — the College Board’s for AP, the official domains for ACT, and for the Common App, an honest read of what those seven minutes will find. The twenty short supplements too, and the UC’s four.

A reader’s clock, running while you read this page.

Common App · Personal essay648 / 650

Every Sunday my grandmother folded dumplings at a card table in the garage, and every Sunday she refused to measure anything. I am deeply passionate about cooking, and it taught me the true meaning of family.

The first time I tried, the dough tore in eleven places. She counted them out loud.

The form, not the rubric

The box stops at 650. Your words don’t.

The striped part is not a penalty. It is text the admissions reader never receives — the Common App text box simply cuts it. Between 250 and 650 there is no bonus for being closer to the limit.

What we read

Every essay an American student actually writes.

Nothing here is borrowed from another country’s exam. No IELTS, no GCSE — those are not your tests, and listing them would only tell you we do not know which country you are in.

AP English · six points

Two of the three rows are all or nothing.

Thesis and Sophistication are scored 0 or 1 — there is no half credit, and a reader on the fence gives the zero. We enforce that in code, because a model asked to be fair will hand you a 0.5 that cannot exist on your score report.

Row A0 or 1

1

Thesis

A defensible thesis with a line of reasoning. Restating the prompt earns zero.

Row B

4

Evidence & Commentary

Specific evidence plus commentary that explains how it supports the argument. This row carries the essay.

Row C0 or 1

1

Sophistication

Genuine complexity — tension, limits of a position, or a vivid style sustained throughout. Roughly one essay in ten.

Typical score: 3–4 / 6. A 5 is strong. A 6 is uncommon — and an essay that is merely well organized, with nothing complicated in it, does not get Row C.

Common App

Four essays every reader has read before.

None of these are bad topics. They are shapes that collapse into the same paragraph every year — and we name the one you are standing in, instead of telling you to “be more authentic.”

The moral bolted on the end

“In the end, this experience taught me that hard work always pays off.”

Six paragraphs of story, then one that explains what it taught you. The reader got there four paragraphs ago.

The thesaurus voice

“My insatiable proclivity for erudition burgeoned exponentially.”

Sentences nobody speaks in. It reads as a person hiding, which is the opposite of what the essay is for.

The résumé in prose

“As captain of debate, president of NHS and founder of two clubs…”

Every achievement restated in full sentences. They already have your activities list.

The hardship with no thinking in it

“It was the hardest year of my life, but I got through it.”

Something difficult happened. The essay reports it and stops. What the reader needs is what you make of it now.

How it works

Draft, upload, read the notes.

01

Pick the real exam

AP Lang and the Common App are not the same essay and are not scored the same way. Choose one and the rubric follows.

02

Typed or photographed

Photograph a handwritten draft and it gets transcribed first, then read against the rubric. No retyping.

03

Draft over draft

Every version is kept. You can see which row moved and which one has not budged since September.

Deadlines do not move.
Drafts do.

Put in the draft you are least sure about — that is the one worth reading first.
